A Special Letter from the Executive Director
of Special Delivery International

As many of you know, Special Delivery International has made some recent changes to the main office staffing levels. We did this for a couple of reasons.  First of all, the implementation of the Hague Convention in Guatemala promised to slow processes down, hence, making it difficult to justify offering referrals to adoptive families after a pre-determined date. Administrative changes were an obvious necessity until the financial impact of all of the changes in Guatemala was less of an unknown.

Secondly, the Eagle's Nest continues to care for your children. We at Special Delivery International don't want anything to change about the way your children are cared for at Eagle's Nest. We believe they get the highest quality care available anywhere in Guatemala. Yes, it is costly to care for the children. Eagle's Nest staff proudly runs the home very efficiently, but there are many resources that go into taking care of the over 60 children that reside in the Eagle's Nest. It is our goal to make sure that during this time of uncertainty in Guatemala, the Eagle's Nest does not suffer any shortages in their resources.  The administrative changes we are making now will ensure these resources remain intact.

In the meantime, despite administrative changes, please know that your consultant is available to you to answer questions about your case, or assist you in your paperwork. The following is a list of the consultants and their cell phone numbers, along with the best time to reach them. When leaving messages for your consultant, it is important to leave the time and date that you called. Please allow 24 hours for your consultant to return your call.

At Special Delivery International, we are committed to providing the highest quality adoption services to adoptive families and prospective adoptive families.  Our first priority, however, are the children. While we are endeared to the needs of the children's home, and are steadfastly focused upon conserving their resources, we recognize that without you, they would not have found their “forever family. I encourage you to feel free to send me a personal email if you feel you are having difficulty connecting with your consultant, or if you simply wish to share something about your adoption journey. You may reach me at cindy@specialdeliveryint.com.

It is our great pleasure and honor to be the agency you chose, and to be associated with Eagle's Nest children's home.

Very Sincerely Yours,

Cynthia Boggs

What Your Donations Have
Accomplished After Hurricane Stan

When Claire and I received your financial help for the victims of Stan in November, we called a special meeting of our pastors to enlist them in the purchase and distribution of food and supplies, but more importantly in the difficult decision making task of determining who needs the help.

Each pastor took the task seriously, visited the most affected areas, and set out with members of their congregations to help as many as possible.

I asked each of them to fill out a simple form to record who was helped, and the first of those forms is included here for you to see. They named the projects, stated what was spent, and a short list of those receiving food supplies. Each person was given a gospel tract and a testimony from someone personally or in some cases in a group.

I wish you could have seen the excitement on the faces of the first ones to complete the project. They told of the devastation, but it was with great excitement they related the stories of gratitude of those receiving help. Your gifts made the difference for many people, and there are many open doors to the hearts of people we didn’t even know before.

Enjoy the following pictures, the fruit of your generosity.

Don’t miss checking this site in early January to read a story about ten cuban doctors, their assistance in the relief effort and the many blessings that flowed from their involvement.  There will also be an update about the other projects that will be completed this month.

We are visiting our family in the US this Christmas season and will return to Guatemala on December 30. We left checks in Guatemala for 2 additional projects, and as we have received additional funds this month, we will again call upon pastors to seek out the most needy.

Every person that has helped in the effort has asked me to pass on this message from the victims. “Please tell your friends and church members how much we appreciate their help.” They all, as I do, ask that God will bless each of you.

May God Bless You,

Larry and Claire Boggs

November Update Letter
From Larry Boggs in Guatemala

Eagle's Nest

Dear Friends,

As you may already know, all of the Eagle’s Nest children have been in the new facility since September. We closed the Mixco house at the end of August, and it is wonderful to have all the children together in one place.

With some exceptions, the interior of the home is finished. There are some light fixtures lacking, motion lights outside are ready to be installed, but we are very comfortable without these minor amenities until the next group helps us to install them.

We have received funds for playground equipment, but plan to purchase this after we install a chain link fence for their protection.

Besides the fence, which will cost about $800.00, we lack the garage door on the lower level, about $400.00, and about 9 sets of bars for the upstairs patio, $1,100.00. The bars are to keep the children from falling out. At present the doors that lead to the patio are locked, and the space is unused.

Some of these items we would normally be able to obtain with funds that many of you send monthly, however since hurricane Stan destroyed so much of this area, all of our groups scheduled from then until the end of the year have cancelled, leaving us with the monthly expense of the camp and retreat center. We expect this situation to reverse itself soon, but would ask you to prayerfully consider the possibility of helping with one of these projects this year.

Almost forgot: Each year we count on some of you to help with Christmas for the kids.

We appreciate what many of you have already done, and want you to know that we count on you as active participants of this ministry, whether helping with the needs, praying, or enjoying the blessing of seeing these children grow up happy knowing the Lord.

May God Bless You,

Larry Boggs
President

Hurricane Stan, The Aftermath
From Larry and Claire

Claire and I, returning from Guatemala City to Quetzaltenango on October 4th, made the decision not to visit Sololá because of the late hour, fierce rain, and the multitude of mud- slides we had already encountered. That decision proved to be a good one, yet a frustrating one. Frustrating, because we were completely isolated from the children’s home, unable to help. Good, because in Quetzaltenango we were only without electricity in our area for about 36 hours, and we were able to direct operations and communicate with many of our people from this strategic point. 2005 Hurricane Stan Destruction

It is midnight on Saturday. We still are stuck in Xela, the roads are closed to the coastal road and to the mountain. Parts of Solola are still impassable. Some of the tourists went by bus up to the landslide and then walked across and took other buses to the city. We will not be able to do that with babies, so we will have to wait until the roads are clear. Our 4X4 could make most of the trip, but the lines of traffic make it difficult to calculate the time. We don't feel like we want to drive several hours with Ana, Vicenta and the baby and then have to get turned back. When we go we need to take them. The girls need to be there to take their turn and let the others have a day off. They have worked overtime, all week. Ana has had a baby with her since Monday. They also have used most of the gas drying clothes. But now they have to dry clothes on the lines in the house. The gas truck can't make it to Solola yet. They do have water and lights so that is a blessing. The kids are doing fine and the ladies are ok too.

There is a lot of damage to the roads. We think it will be several weeks before
things are open like before. And it will take months to repair the damage made in 2-3 days. We are thankful that most of our people were not hurt. Some of our worker's families lost their homes.

Just so you know we are dry and kind of warm. Everything is damp. We stay in our bedroom and heat only that room. Not much we can do. Until tonight I could not even do e-mail. Tomorrow we'll go to church. We will go here in town since we can't drive anywhere.

In Las Majadas the mountain came down and covered some houses there too. The main road to the church was ruined. It will not be passable for months.

The road is washed out in San Juan. In San Jose they opened the church for refugees who lost their homes. All the towns are near creeks which all have been turned into rivers. All of the bridges are out in Reu. Santa Lucia is completely destroyed. There are a lot of gangs in that area so there is a lot of looting. In Panajachel down by the lake the roads are gone in several places but the worst area is around the big waterfall.

It is so sad to see so much destruction in just a few days.

It is Sunday night. We were going to Solola today, but we can't get information as to the conditions of the road. Yesterday it was an ok route, but tonight they said that there was a truck stuck and couldn't get it out. So we decided to wait until tomorrow to see what the news said. We checked and the roads are better now from Solola to the city, but the buses are still not going down. So Jose has the Izusu and will take Mimi and the baby up to the cross road and send them on the bus if the buses are really going. We won't know until tomorrow. The problem is that it continues to rain and so we don't know until morning if there are more land slides.

Eagle’s Nest is still doing ok. They have water and also the market has food so they are ok. Tomorrow the truck with milk and supplies should becoming. They said they have one more day of diapers.

Here in Xela they are not letting anyone buy gas. We have a full tank, but if we don't have to go we will just stay here. McDonald's was still working last night, but today they are closed. They had a generator, but probably ran out of food. Most of the stores here in Xela don't have food.

Lots of people are getting food and supplies from the city, but can't get them here or to the affected areas.

We'll let you all know what happens tomorrow.

Urgent Need !!!

Guatemala was hit by Hurricane Stan on October 4, 2005. Larry and Claire are in the town of Quetzaltenango and are unable to leave due to mud slides and flooding. They have gotten a report from one of their churches in Las Majadas located next to the Volcano Santa Maria. The community has suffered large land slides due to the rain fall; early estimates predict they will not be able get supply vehicles into that area for several months. The Eagles Nest Children’s home is safe; however, large land slides and flooding prevent any supply vehicles from entering or leaving the area. The need of the thousands of people affected by this storm in Guatemala is immediate and financial. Larry and Claire will be able to assist many of the affected people by purchasing food, water, blankets and clothing, but they need your help. To help the displaced families, please send a financial donation to Eagles Nest.

Please indicate in the memo the money is to be applied to the Larry Boggs’ ministry: Displaced Families.

Checks can be mailed to:

Eagle's Nest

Dear Friends,

Last November Claire and I set out on a fundraising campaign to raise $75,000.00 to finish the 2nd floor of the new Eagle’s Nest children’s home. We knew the total cost would probably be twice that amount, but we figured that if we could get the children in the upstairs, we could take our time with the downstairs, using teams and our regular income to finish the total project.

What a thrill to see the entire $75,000.00 come in before we returned to Guatemala just before Christmas. Thanks to over 120 donations of all sizes from churches, old friends, adoptive parents, and new friends, the total to date has exceeded $130.000.00, making certain our goal of seeing this entire facility in operation soon.

Even with a larger crew, the upstairs won't be ready for finish work inside until the middle of May, the date we had hoped to bring the children from Quetzaltenango. Nevertheless, we are leaving Quetzaltenango the end of this month and doubling up the children in the apartments in Solola, and the house in Guatemala City.

Please make plans to attend our reunion in Wichita Kansas July 21-22 at Messiah Baptist Church. We have invited Elvira Ramírez, Vicenta Velásquez will be to be our guests of honor. They have completed 20 years of service and assuming INS grants them a visitor’s visa for the trip, they will be thrilled to meet children that were in their care from 1984 until the present.

As president of the board of directors for Eagle’s Nest, let me say thank you to everyone who has given any amount or prayed for the funds for this project. Obviously it is important to God that these children are taken care of and He has used you to make this goal reachable.

May God richly bless you,

Larry Boggs
President
Eagle’s Nest Association
