The
first step to starting an adoption with Special Delivery International
is filling out the application.
Special delivery
requires every family to fill out our application. Once we have
received a family’s
application and home study, it is reviewed and the family is
called and advised or notified
of their approval.
- If a family
is approved a file will be created and assigned to one of
three adoption consultants.
- The adoption
consultant will guide the family through getting
CIS (INS) approval and putting together the Dossier.
The
International Dossier is a collection of all the papers
and documents needed to complete an adoption (see “How
to Get Started”).
A Dossier can be completed within 6 to 10 weeks depending
on the family’s motivation to get it done.
- Once
the Dossier is completed, it is sent to the
Special Delivery Adoption Consultant who reviews
it and sends
it to Guatemala
for translation and registration.
- The home
study is a very important element of the Dossier. Once the
home study
has been reviewed
by Special
Delivery International,
the process of referring a child will begin.
There are many considerations made when making a child
referral. The main
emphasis is placed
upon
referring a child who we feel will benefit
the most by
being a member of a particular family.
- When
a child is offered to a family by our Social Worker they
will be presented
with a photo, along
with medical reports
and
any background information available to
us.
- If the family
accepts the child offered, this is considered placement and
the family
will sign
a power
of attorney
provided by Special
Delivery International. The attorney
in Guatemala will then be able to begin the
adoption.
The adoption
takes approximately six to eight months to complete. While
the
adoption
is
processing,
the family will be provided
with monthly updates on health and
weight and be provided with photos
as they are available. We will also
inform the family as to where their papers are
in the process,
as we
are provided new
information
from the attorney.
Complications
in the Adoption Process
Complications during the adoption process
will happen. In every case it is
the job of our Attorney
and this
office to address
them as
quickly as possible. As the attorney
navigates a family’s
papers through the courts, the
adoptive family will be asked by
the judges,
the attorney and/or social workers
processing their case to fix or
provide additional papers or documents.
This is often the most
frustrating
part of the process for the adoptive
family. These complications cannot
be foreseen, but the requirements
must be met in order to
move the adoption to the next step.
The adoptive family must be prepared
to act on these requests as quickly
a possible to avoid
any further
delays.
