Question: Where do the children come from that Special
Delivery International adopts to waiting families?
Answer: There are several ways Special Delivery
International finds out about children who are available for
adoption. Special
Delivery
International has a very close working relationship with a temporary
children’s home in Guatemala. That home is called “Eagle’s
Nest”. Special Delivery International works almost exclusively
with Eagle’s Nest in matching children available for adoption
with waiting families in the United States. There are four main
ways children come to live at Eagle’s Nest.
- The Guatemalan
Courts assign children to Eagle’s Nest
if they are abandoned or are likely to be abandoned in
the hope a home
will be found for that child.
- Hospitals,
Police and Fire Departments will contact Eagle’s
Nest if they find an abandoned child.
- Mothers
who can’t
care for their children know that Eagle’s
Nest can provide care and shelter for their children.
- Pregnant
mothers who have been ostracized from their home
or communities due becoming pregnant out of wed-lock
can come
and
stay at the children’s
home during the last trimester.

Answer:
- If a child
is abandoned the Guatemala Courts issue an abandonment decree
declaring a
child has been abandoned and a family
must be found to care for and raise the child.
- If a mother
wants to relinquish her rights she must submit to a DNA test
to prove she is in fact the mother,
and must be interviewed
by a Government Social Worker to determine her
exact intentions and informed of the finality of her decision.
| Question Index | Question: How long does an adoption take?
Answer:
- The process
takes about 5-8 months from the time we have ALL of a family’s
paperwork.

can take longer if a family does not complete all necessary
paperwork accurately and in a timely
manner.
